Emergency Light Testing for business

Legislation requires that your company's emergency lights are regularly tested and maintained in full working order, so that they function effectively in an emergency.

TNE Electrical offers your company a regular testing service for emergency lighting. This includes the testing of key switches, batteries, luminaries and control equipment.

Lights being installed by engineer

Emergency lighting is important in case your building's mains power fails. A loss of mains electricity could be the result of a fire, power cut or local circuit failure, and cause the normal lighting to fail. This may lead to sudden darkness and a possible danger to your company's employees, through physical danger or panic.

Health & Safety legislation requires all commercial and public premises to have an emergency lighting installation that complies with British Standard BS5266:2005.

Emergency lighting should be installed in a way that is visually acceptable, meets users' needs for ease of operation and maintenance and enables safe passage in the event of a power failure or fire. It is also required to meet fire safety regulations.

Emergency lighting systems automatically operate for between 1 and 3 hours on a battery backup system. These need to be regularly checked and tested to ensure they work correctly.

All emergency lighting should be tested for its full rated duration:

  • Annually - 3-hour test of the emergency system. Test results should be recorded in the logbook
  • 6 Monthly - 1-hour test of the emergency system. Test results should be recorded in the logbook
  • Monthly - 15-minute flick test to ensure the light fittings activate in "test mode". Test results should be recorded in the logbook
